In Photos – My Favourite Places To Write. How About You?

Tears threatened as the shoes thudded into the corner of the room. After several fraught attempts to close the lid of my suitcase, I reluctantly pulled out two pairs of absolutely essential shoes and prepared to leave them behind. Well, I’ll soon find out how essential they are now.

I’m on the move again and returning to Cyprus – so tomorrow’s post will be brief (and pre-scheduled!) This is going to be my office for a little while:

Breakfast in Cyprus

Breakfast on the balcony

Sometimes I like to head off outdoors armed with writing materials (I rarely take a laptop, just scribble down ideas in the old fashioned way). Here are two venues where I regularly pitch up (right by the sea and serving very moreish halloumi and lountza pittas!):

[Halloumi is the national cheese of Cyprus and lountza is similar to bacon]

Yiallos beach bar

La Boite

Where do you write your posts? Do you have a favourite spot – somewhere where the words seem to flow more easily?

Footnote: (how apt…): Until further notice any photos of me will not include feet. Can’t subject the world to my lack of footwear.

    Love your office!
I find that I get inspired to write all the time- so I make sure to have my handy dandy note pad on me at all times.
PS- how many pairs of shoes do you need?

    • KarenGuttridge

Oh I do too – I’d be lost without my little pad! As for shoes – I had 4 pairs in the case plus hiking boots. Too ambitious! But I am going away for a couple of months… (excuse!)

  • Peggy Martinez

Thanks for the beautiful photos, I felt like I was on an exotic vacation, even if it was in my “view”!

    • KarenGuttridge

Hi Peggy – hope you could feel the sunshine too! :-)

  • Joy

Oh My! I wanna join U! LOVE!

    • KarenGuttridge

Haha I’ll expect you then Joy! ;-)

  • Brittany

I can see why you enjoy writing in these places! I just did a similar post about where you do your best thinking. Sometimes, I come up with my best ideas when I’m on a bike, so my view is always changing!

    • KarenGuttridge

I totally agree Brittany – I, too, get my best ideas when I launch myself outdoors. A team of researchers has just proved that we’re definitely more creative when in natural surroundings. I was so happy to learn I was doing the right thing that I blogged about it a few days ago! :D

      • Brittany

Omg, that is so true! The longer I sit at the computer, the less I feel inspired.

  • Marian

I have a similar view over the Tyrrehnian Sea towards the Aeolian Islands which keeps me inspired, but no fancy terrace……just a huge olive tree and two sleepy cats.

I always have to WEAR my walking boots when travelling dreaded Ryanair or Easyjet! Hope you packed some woolies.

    • KarenGuttridge

Sounds beautiful Marian. And peaceful. I have been known to clump onboard in walking boots (not my best look…) but – thankfully – not this time. Have packed well – it’s snowing in Cyprus!

  • Tanya Oliver @heelwalker1

You took out shoes?? Surely something less essentianl could have gone??
I like to write in coffee shops – I have several favourites in the Lakes and Sussex. There is something about the buzz and the atmosphere :-)

    • KarenGuttridge

I did actually think about you when I was chucking the shoes out(!) …knew you’d be disappointed in me :( I’m interested in your chosen venue of a coffee shop – I’ve never tried that as I always think it would be too noisy/too many distractions. I shall try Starbucks in Paphos!

  • Donald Brorsen

I would find myself too mesmerized by the views to accomplish much. Enjoy.

    • KarenGuttridge

Hi Donald :-) I will admit to spending far too much time staring out to sea but I do get the job done in the end!

  • Victoria

My favorite place of all time to write in on the train! I love it and also love train rides. I travel at least every 6 weeks aboard Amtrak and I get really inspired.

    • KarenGuttridge

That’s a great idea and one no-one has mentioned yet. I would give it a go myself but British trains are very unappealing! :-)

  • Victoria

My favorite place of all time to write is on the train. I travel about every 6 weeks aboard Amtrak and get so inspired!

  • Elaine

Love the post. I write my blogs at the computer when everyone else is asleep. For regular writing I like a spot in the study room of the library or a table at my favorite cafe.

    • KarenGuttridge

Hi Elaine – sounds a good idea – it’s so peaceful and quiet when everyone is sleeping and no interruptions! Just arrived here in Cyprus – I’m all travelled out! :-)

  • Cheri

Boy, I could get used to an office like that! And I’m not much of a shoe person, so I don’t usually have that problem with the packing. But, if you’re going to be gone for a couple of months, if anything comes up you are unprepared for style-wise, I say that’s a good excuse to treat yourself to something new. You can always put together a little box of extras that you accumulate while away and ship them back home to yourself at the end of your trip.

    • KarenGuttridge

I like this advice! Time to spend :-) A great idea to post them on again. I’ve just arrived here in Cyprus and found that I’ve got plenty of shoes already here!

  • Phoebe Thomas

Ha ha, love your “footnote”. I get the shoe thing, and I too love to write outside with a pen and pad of paper. I write on the terrace, over-looking my Mediterranean garden and pool. I need quiet, cafés are too distracting for me.

    • KarenGuttridge

Me too – peace and quiet every time. I can’t cope with much noise as I’m too easily distracted!
