103 Year Old Says: To Stay Alive, You Have To Move

Mekey Yetashawork, a retired pharmacist in Denver, spends 2 hours every day walking in his local mall. Mekey believes that this practice has helped him to reach the grand old age of 103 years. In his words ” To stay alive, you have to move.”

Everyone who knows me will readily tell you that I’ve banged on about the health benefits of walking for years…in fact, I’ve bored their socks off about it :-D

Over to Mekey…

    Wow! 103 years young, that’s fabulous! Walking is my favorite form of exercise, but difficult to do here in the winter. The closest mall is 90 miles away…sigh

      Hasn’t he done well? :-) And – wow – 90 miles…? I forget how far those distances are in the US!

    Marvellous Mekey!

    Good for him! I firmly believe that exercise daily is the fountain of health, and this is further anecdotal evidence suggesting it. Thanks for sharing!

      I agree. I think it’s important to keep moving and to keep the brain stimulated too!

    What a great message. It really is as simple as walking for our health. Thanks for sharing it. Best Regards, Wendy {UBC}

      Hi Wendy. It makes sense really that walking would be good for us – both physically and mentally!

    When I walked up a mountain with an 83 year old who had done, Annapurna, Everest Base Camp and the Mont Blanc circuit between the years of 77 to 80, I knew there was hope for me yet! And did you know that an 83 year old lady, Bernice Buum, successfully climbed Kilimanjaro in 2010? She trained by walking up and down 10 flights of stairs at the hospital where she volunteers. She did say she probably wouldn’t do it again though! Can’t wait to get old(er)!

    • KarenGuttridge

      I didn’t know about Bernice’s feat but what an achievement! I think hiking is the perfect activity at any age but especially as we get older when I really do believe we can maintain our physical health for much longer. I’ve just returned from a 10km walk in the Paphos mountains – I can feel that I’ve worked! ;-)

    What a good thing to know. I just joined a group that is about fun moving.

    • KarenGuttridge

      I think having fun whilst exercising is the key – that’s one reason I love walking as I can chat as I go! Enjoy your group :-)
